Francisco Buarque de Hollanda, better known as Chico Buarque, is a brazilian singer, guitarist, composer, dramatist, writer and poet. His music often includes social, economic and cultural commentary on Brazil.

The song "Mar e lua" talks quite overtly about lesbian love and is a claim against intolerance. Inspired by a true story, two women who loved, to be judged by their community decided to commit suicide, throwing themselves into a river.

"Geni e o Zepelim" tells the story of a transvestite named Genivaldo, a character in his play "Ópera do Malandro".

"Construção" The poet questioned the senselessness of society, shows the indifference to the most humble.
" ...Murió a contramano entorpeciendo el tránsito
...Murió a contramano entorpeciendo el público
...Murió a contramano entorpeciendo el sábado "
It's worth mentioning the use of the alexandrine and the end of the verses in proparoxytone.

One of the songs by Chico Buarque who criticize the dictatorship is a letter in the form of music. He made "Meu caro amigo" in honor of Augusto Boal who lived in exile, when Brazil was still under the military dictatorship.

"Apesar de você" was write in reference to the military dictatoship and Emílio Garrastazu Médici (3rd president of the military regime). This song was overlooked by the military censors, becoming an important anthem in the democratic movement.
